Alice took a long weekend at the end of May to visit her sister Becky and family in Charleston, South Carolina! Never having been to the East Coast, she was treated to a whirlwind tour of the highlights of the southern seacoast from Charleston, SC to Savannah, GA; From the crumbling bulwark of Fort Sumter, smooth gray beaches on the Isle of Palms, the languid elegance of the French Quarter along Charleston's waterfront, the bustling open market, sweet street praline shops, gorgeous cypress garden, and fabulous food--including fresh oysters, the most amazing shrimp n grits, fried alligator tail, hot boiled peanuts, fried okra, bananas foster cheesecake (tasted exactly like a 'slapstick'!), warm praline pie, fried green tomatoes and pimento cheese, authentic southern bbq, and a fun lunch at Paula Deen's Savannah restuarant Lady and Sons--Alice was pretty much enjoying the ultimate weekend gettaway! She'd go again in a heartbeat!
really really old bricks at Ft. Sumter
the old promenade is wide enough for two hoop skirted ladies to stroll side by side!
loved the Cypress Swamp!--nothing so exotic as spanish moss and black reflective water . . .
even a wild 'gator!
Sweet beach 'houses'
Alice and Becky spent a memorable and entirely enjoyable sunrise gathering shells of all kinds, dipping bare feet into the warm ocean, and watching the swaying palms alongside pastel beach houses . . .
Alice, outside of The Lady and Sons. Really good homecooked Southern food!
one of the sights to be seen on a Savannah carriage ride.
(Thanks Becky and Deryk and Violet and Elise!)
